The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo used to say to her husband the great muralist Diego Rivera, “As usual, when I get away from you, I take your world and your life within me.” Reflecting on this famous saying, as people of faith, it is meaningful because of the political divide we are living in. Soon, we will be in the Lent season, a time to reflect and expand in being better and more in tune with the Gospel values.
Retaking Frida’s Kahlo quote, it will be meaningful for us to carry -not only- the ones we love or sympathize with but all our neighbors, their joys, yearnings, and sorrows, and to be present with each one of them. That way, you and I will make present the reign of God; therefore, life could be more harmonious with the concepts of the Gospel where the last should be the first, and everyone is invited to sit at the table. You may think it is a utopia or a dream, but our world is beautiful, and silently, many people are helping each other, so we need to look twice around us and see. As Christians, goodness is in our DNA. God lives within each of us and he is waiting to emerge through our actions, greetings, smiles, and good deeds.
Do you accept the challenge of taking within you the world and the lives of our neighbors?
I invite you to take a deep breath in a moment of awe and admiration, because God's goodness is among us, waiting to be seen.
